2 Information Services Project Sentinel: Defined  To increase regional emergency preparedness in response to terrorism attacks (anthrax, ricin, 9/11) in the National Capital area  Biomedical Application to meaningfully connect Emergency Room information in Metro Washington Symptom Recording / Analysis Confidential Access to Patient Data Geographic Information Systems Dramatically Improved Data Visualization Coordinated Communications  Funded by National Library of Medicine grant  Principal Investigators: Dr. Seong K. Mun and Georgetown’s Imaging Science and Information Systems Department (ISIS)

3 University Information Services Project Sentinel: UIS role  Authentication and Authorization Consulting and Implementation Services Use Shibboleth middleware to initially provide authentication services across multiple trusted domains Determine and resolve the authorization issues for sharing of information using Shibboleth Use initially for web-based ‘Insight’ application and then extend to grid environments when possible  Network Connectivity Consulting and Implementation Services to connect: Georgetown University Georgetown University Hospital Washington Hospital Center D.C. Department of Health U.S. Department of Homeland Security

4 University Information Services Project Sentinel: Importance  2-4 staff positions are funded by the NLM in the central IT organization  Increases UIS presence in Georgetown Medical Center grant funded research and bioinformatics projects to extend middleware services  UIS brings Internet2 networking and application middleware leadership to a major medical information demonstration project  Puts us in a favorable position to support middleware components in other existing and future research projects
