2 Xerophytes Xero means dry Phyte means plant They are able to survive in an ecosystem with little or no water. Plants that live under arctic conditions may have the need for xerophytic adaptations as water is frozen

3 Types of xerophytes 1.Succulent plants - they store water in their stems or leaves. They often don’t have leaves e.g. cactus 2.Bulbs – water is stored in bulbs. They may spend a period of dormancy during draught conditions underground. 3.Short lived annuals – seeds can lie dormant until rainfall e.g. California Poppy flower and form seeds within 4 weeks of rainfall

4 What kind of adaptations do you think they will have?

5 Adaptations They are mostly of the epidermal layer and the stomata. They can be split into 3 categories: –To limit water loss –To maximise storage of water –To maximise uptake of water –Complete the table by placing the adaptations into the correct category
