3 F ORESHADOWING Based on the introductions of chapter one in Animal Farm, what are your predictions for the characters and events of the story?

4 O RAL P ERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES 1. Repetition: words, sounds or images may be repeated to reinforce the main point(s). 2. Rule of Three: Saying something three times carries weight; three times is the sign of a powerful speaker. The Rule of Three allows the speaker to express concepts more completely, emphasize main points, and increase the memorization of the message. 3. Flattery: Praising the audience, to get them to agree with the speaker. 4. Rhetorical Questions: These questions don’t require an answer. Rather the answers are implied and the audience agrees with them (of course).

5 O RAL PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES 5. Emotive Language: Engaging the audience’s emotions by using words that carry emotional weight. Encourages the audience to respond on an emotional level rather than considering the facts. 6. Hyperbole: An exaggeration used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but not to be taken literally. They are used to create emphasis and effect. 7. Imperatives: Forms commands or requests, including the giving of prohibition or permission.

6 A NALYZING PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES IN OLD MAJOR ’ S SPEECH Old Major’s speech is located on pages 5-8 of Animal Farm. Your task is to locate and provide textual evidence of each of the oral persuasive techniques in Old Major’s speech. Make sure to include the actual quote from the book including page number. (See handout)
