Foreshadowing Foreshadowing is a book or movie giving us hints that something is coming to change the whole story. Foreshadowing uses these hints to create suspense, but it does not give the whole book away. Some are subtle, and some are obvious.

Lesson Goal and Essential Question Lesson Goal: Students will be able to analyze how the structure or form of a text contributes to its meaning. Essential Question: How does foreshadowing contribute to a story? How does it help a reader?

Foreshadowing in Books In The Wizard of Oz the lady trying to take Dorothy’s dog is constantly called “a witch.” She turns out to be the witch in Oz. In A Fault in Our Stars August constantly says, “I don’t fee so good.” or “It just hurts.” His fate is told to us in these remarks before he reveals it himself. In “Jones and the Stray” we find out within the first few pages Jones does not want to remember her past, she left in a hurry, and is outraged at Ah-Geez’s abuse. This foreshadows our discovery of her OWN abuse.

Foreshadowing in Movies Today we will watch four movie clips. Please write down what phrases, music, or facial features are being used to foreshadow. Also, include what you think or know they are for shadowing. Star Wars: Iron Man: Cinderella: Finding Nemo:

Foreshadowing in Movies Star Wars  Constant traps they preeminently predict. Iron Man  Avengers Cinderella  Evil stepmother’s choice to lock keep Cinderella from the ball. Finding Nemo  The mom wants to name ONE child Nemo. Only one child stays alive; thus, Nemo!
