What’s the matter with matter? By Elaine Williams

What is an atom? An atom is the smallest particle of matter Everything is made of atoms Atoms combine together to form molecules

What is a solid? A solid keeps its shape A solid keeps its shape The atoms in a solid are in a close pattern The atoms in a solid are in a close pattern The atoms do not move around The atoms do not move around A solid is hard A solid is hard Solids can not be compressed (squashed) because the atoms are very close to each other Solids can not be compressed (squashed) because the atoms are very close to each other

What is a liquid? A liquid takes the shape of its container, they do not have their own shape A liquid takes the shape of its container, they do not have their own shape The atoms have more space between them The atoms have more space between them Liquids can flow because the atoms can move past each other Liquids can flow because the atoms can move past each other Liquids can not be compressed (squashed) because the atoms are still close together but not necessarily touching Liquids can not be compressed (squashed) because the atoms are still close together but not necessarily touching

What is a gas? Gas atoms expand to fill their container The atoms are very spread out and always moving around and changing patterns Gas atoms are stopped by the walls of their container Gases can be compressed (squashed) because the atoms are so far apart they can be squeezed together

Fun Facts: What is solid, liquid, and gas? Water is solid when its ICE Water is liquid at room temperature Water is gas when it boils and evaporates

Comprehension Questions 1. What is an atom? 2. How are atoms arranged in a solid? 3. How are atoms arranged in a liquid? 4. How are atoms arranged in a gas?
