confidential3 Comparing and ordering fractions To compare two fractions, we can write them as fractions with the same denominator.

confidential4 Steps to compare two fractions To compare two fractions, Find the least common denominator (LCD) of the fractions. That is, find the least common multiple of the denominators. Rewrite each fraction as an equivalent fractions using the LCD. Compare the numerators.

confidential5 examples Which one is greater – 5 or 9 ? 8 16 First, find the LCM of the denominators: The LCM of 8 and 16 is 16. Rewrite each fraction with denominator 16 5 x 2 = 10, So 5 = 10 ; 9 = 9 8 x 2 16 8 16 16 16 Compare the numerators: 10 > 9. so 5 > 9 8 16

confidential6 Example – 2 Which is smaller- 2 or 4 ? 3 9 LCM of 3 and 9 = 9. Rewrite each fraction with denominator 9. 2 x 3 = 6 ; 4 = 4 3 x 3 9 9 9 Compare the numerator : 6 > 4. Therefore, 4 < 2 9 3

confidential7 Now your turn Use ‘>’, ‘<‘, or ‘ =‘ to make a true sentence. 5 …<…. 7 12 8 1 …=…. 8 2 16

9 Ordering fractions The method used for comparing fractions can be used for ordering fractions.

confidential10 Order fractions- example – 1 Order the fractions 1, 9, 3 and 5 from 2 14 4 7 Least to greatest. lcd of fractions is 28. so rewrite each fraction with denominator 28. 1 x 14 = 14 ; 9 x 2 = 18 ; 3 x 7 = 21 2 x 14 28 14 x 2 28 4 x 7 28 5 x 4 = 20 7 x 4 28 So 1 = 14 ; 9 = 18 ; 3 = 21 ; 5 = 20 2 28 14 28 4 28 7 28 14 < 18 < 20 < 21 The order of the fractions from least to greatest is ½, 9/14, 5/7, 3/4

confidential11 Example – 2 Order the fractions from least to greatest. 4/5, ¾, 2/5, ¼ The LCD = 20. so rewrite each fraction with denominator 20. 4 x 4 = 16 ; 3 x 5 = 15 ; 2 x 4 = 8 5 x 4 20 4 x 5 20 5 x 4 20 1 x 5 = 5 5 x 4 20 So, 4/5 = 16/20 ; ¾ = 15/20 ; 2/5 = 8/20 ; 1/5 = 5/20. Compare the numerators Therefore 5 < 8 < 15 < 16. So, 1/5 ; 2/5 ; ¾ ; 4/5

confidential12 Now your turn Order the fractions from least to greatest: ½, 5/6, 2/3, 3/5 Answer: ½ < 3/5 < 2/3 < 5/6

confidential18 review To compare two fractions, we can write them as fractions with the same denominator. The method used for comparing fractions can be used for ordering fractions.
