doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 1 AP Connection Period in TDLS Date: 2010-03-16 Authors:

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 2 Abstract This presentation contains the details of the proposed change for the comment submitted by Sudheer Grandhi in the first IEEE P802.11z 15 day recirculation Sponsor Ballot.

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 3 Need for AP Connection in TDLS Applications that need Internet access –Internet Gaming –Digital Rights Management –Relevant Information download –Context/Content based Advertisements –Future Applications ? To support the above Applications TDLS needs –AP connection times/periods for internet access –Especially during “Off Channel” operation

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 4 AP Connection Period Function AP Connection period “Capability” AP Connection period “Setup” (and “Cancellation”) AP Connection Period “Activity”

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 5 AP Connection Period Capability Capability information exchange –Via TDLS Setup Request/Response messages –Include capability indication in the extended capabilities A TDLS STA may try to setup an AP Connection period schedule with a peer TDLS STA only if such a capability is indicated as supported

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 6 AP Connection Period Setup : Procedure AP Connection periods can be setup by –TDLS peers exchanging relevant information –TDLS Request/Response message exchange Relevant information can include –AP connection times or periodicity –AP connection durations –Start Time and End Time –Cancellation

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 7 AP Connection Period Setup : Options Option1: Modify/Use existing TDLS messages for eg. –TDLS Setup –TDLS Peer PSM –TDLS Channel Switch Option2: New TDLS messages –TDLS AP connection period Request message –TDLS AP connection period Response message

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 8 AP Connection Period Setup : Option1 TDLS Setup messages modified to include AP Connection Period information TDLS Peer PSM messages( two possibilities) –Modified to include AP Connection Period information –Used as is but make specification clear to allow AP connection during Peer PSM “non-Awake” time TDLS Channel Switch messages( two possibilities) –Modified to include AP Connection Period information –Used as is but make specification clear on how AP connection may be achieved

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 9 AP Connection Period Setup : Option 2 TDLS AP connection Period Request message –Sent either through AP or directly to TDLS peer –Includes information such as: AP connection periodicity, Duration, Time reference, End Time, Cancellation TDLS AP connection Period Response message –Sent either through AP or directly to TDLS peer –Includes information: Accept/Reject, Status code.

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission AP Connection Period Activity If TDLS STA on “Base Channel” –Connect/communicate with AP If TDLS STA on “Off Channel” –Switch to “Base Channel” –Connect/communicate with AP –Switch back to “Off Channel” Communicating with AP during TDLS –TDLS STA establishes and determines how data is sent and received during AP Connection periods based on AP capabilities –Any available MAC mechanisms may be used when AP supports them eg. PS-poll, Reverse Direction etc. March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 10

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission Proposed Change (1/4) Add the following section: 11.19.7 AP Connection Period in TDLS A TDLS STA shall be able to establish AP connection periods during TDLS operation to access the distribution system or the Internet to support applications such as Internet gaming, digital rights management and context aware information or advertisements download. A TDLS STA shall be able to setup such AP connection periods by negotiating with peer TDLS STAs. A TDLS STA shall determine how data is sent and received during AP Connection periods based on the capabilities supported by the AP. Any available MAC mechanisms when supported by the AP may be used during AP connection periods eg. PS-poll, Reverse Direction Grant etc.. A TDLS STA if on an off channel shall switch to the base channel to communicate with the AP during its AP connection period and return to the off channel before the AP connection period expires. March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 11

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission Proposed Change (2/4) Update specification with text to “Use as is” or “Modify” for AP Connection purposes in Section 7.4.11 –TDLS Setup messages –TDLS Peer PSM messages –TDLS Channel Switch messages March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 12

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission Proposed Change (3/4) Insert the following two lines in Table 7-57 in Section 7.4.11: –12 TDLS AP Connection Period Request –13 TDLS AP Connection Period Response Change Reserved Action field values to “14- 255” in Table 7-57 March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 13

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 14 Proposed Change (4/4) Add Section: 7.4.11.13 TDLS AP Connection Period Request frame format –Include information fields: AP connection periodicity, Duration, Time reference, End Time, Cancellation –Sent either through AP or directly to TDLS peer Add Section: 7.4.11.14 TDLS AP connection Period Response frame format –Include information fields: Accept/Reject, Status code –Sent either through AP or directly to TDLS peer

doc.: IEEE 802.11-10/0247r1 Submission March 2010 Sudheer Grandhi, InterDigital Communications, LLCSlide 15 Summary AP Connection Periods during TDLS operation needed to support applications that require internet access. Two options/approaches suggested for supporting such a mechanism: –Option (1) Use/Modify existing messages –Option (2) New messages
