2  The moon orbits the Earth as the Earth orbits the sun.  Half of the moon is always lit by the sun (it has a nighttime and a daytime like Earth).

3  As the moon revolves around Earth, we see different parts of the lit Moon.  These are called "phases" of the Moon.

4  The moon takes about 29 days to complete a full cycle of moon phases. This is about 1 month.  The Moon passes through four major shapes during the cycle. The phases always follow one another in the same order: New moon First quarter Full moon Last Quarter Moon Phases

5 The lighted side of the Moon faces away from the Earth. This means that the Sun, Earth, and Moon are almost in a straight line, with the Moon in between the Sun and the Earth. The Moon that we see looks very dark.
