3 Undefined Terms: words that do not have formal definitions, but there is an agreement about what they mean. Point: has no dimension. It is represented by a dot. It is labeled with a capital block letter. Line: has one dimension. It is represented by a line with two arrowheads, but it extends without end. It is labeled with two capital block letters underneath a line symbol. Example: Plane: has two dimensions. It is represented by a shape that looks like a floor or wall, but it extends with no end. It is represented by a parallelogram followed by 3 capital letters or one capital italics letter. AB

5 Additional Notes: Only two points are necessary to create a line. Collinear - on the same line Noncollinear - not on the same line Three noncollinear points create a plane.

6 Defined Terms: terms that can be described using known terms Line segment: consists of two endpoints and all the points between them. Labeled with two capital block letters below a line segment bar. Ray: consists of an endpoint and all the points to one side of that point. It is represented by two capital letters: the endpoint first and the point in the direction of the ray underneath an arrow. CD

8 Ruler Postulate: The points on a line can be matched one to one with real numbers Distance: The absolute value of the difference of the coordinates of A and B Example BA 2 11

9 Determine if the point is on the line. y = 3x + 2 (1,5) (x, y) so x = 1 and y = 5 Substitute into the equation 5 = 3(1) + 2 5 = 3 + 2 5 = 5 Because the two sides are equal, the point is on the line

10 Determine if the point is on the line. y = 2x - 4 (5, 3)
