1 Informational Workshop 2016 – 2017 Call

2  University Professional Development Grants (UPD)  Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities Grants (RSCA)  All activities must occur between July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017.

3  Assist probationary and tenured unit 3 employees working to meet the qualifications for retention, tenure, or promotion  Full professors, librarians at a rank equivalent to full professors, lecturers, and coaches are eligible for UPD grants. Granted in unique and limited circumstances.  Awards, other than assigned time, may be made to temporary faculty in unique and limited circumstances  UPD awards by be granted up to $8,000 (most are funded in $2,000 - $5,000 range)

Mini-grants for research, scholarship, and creative activities which includes innovative pedagogy ◦ Buy equipment and/or supplies ◦ Conduct research ◦ Travel to present papers at professional meetings, or to publish the results of previous research. ◦ Pay student assistants, for clerical support, etc. ◦ Pay for transcription/translation/analysis services.

Funds for one to three units of assigned time for scholarly purposes.  Funds may be used to undertake a research project leading to publication, or to complete publication of already completed research,  Funds for other activities that lead to positive career advancements, including preparing to teach a greater variety of courses.  Course releases may be requested for Fall 2016 and Spring 2017. Current costs are $1,750 per unit.

6 Mini-grants for research, scholarship, and creative activities that include innovative pedagogy ◦ Test promising ideas ◦ Conduct research (data collection, field research) ◦ Obtain preliminary results prior to applying for external grant ◦ Pay student assistants, for clerical support, etc. ◦ Pay for transcription/translation/analysis services.

7  Complete application and the Bio sketch form (equivalent to a two page CV summary) at: https://csusm.infoready4.com/  Dean’s signature not required. However, your college dean’s office will review your application. Check with your dean’s office about the college review procedures.  Incomplete and late applications are disqualified. Applications must be submitted to InfoReady by 11:00 AM, on Monday, February 22, 2016.

8 1) Write for a general faculty audience not familiar with your field and discuss the relevance to your field. Avoid jargon. 2) The rubric reflects the most important elements for writing a compelling proposal. The proposal must clearly state the process you will follow to produce a finished product, or “deliverable.” Make sure to follow the rubric as you prepare your proposal.

9 3) Requests for assigned time are for “Fall 2016 or Spring 2017 semester.” Detailed justification is needed. Be very specific as to your activities and how they fit into a plan for project completion. 4) Budgets must be itemized, detailed, and justified. Include estimated research costs and sources to support these costs.

10 5)Be detailed and specific about the nature of student involvement (How did you calculate number of hours and pay scale?) How does student involvement promote your professional development? (Funds are not intended to solely support student research) 6) Tie attending professional conferences to tangible outcomes. If you are not presenting, then list compelling tangible outcomes.

11 7) If you are asking for funding to increase your knowledge base, or need to pay to develop skills to support a project, explain how knowledge or skills gained will remain with the university. 8) Tell us if you will receive or have applied for funding from other sources.
