2 Emergencies What is an emergency? An emergency is any unplanned event that threatens employees, customers, or the public; that shuts down business operations; or that causes physical or environmental damage. Emergencies can be natural or man made

3 Examples of Emergencies What are some examples of emergencies that occur in a workplace or that could affect the workplace? Severe illness or injury Fires Floods Hurricanes Tornadoes Earthquakes Power outages Chemical spills Explosions Toxic releases Terrorism Violence

4 Minimizing Emergencies The best way to minimize the effects of an emergency is to know ahead of time what to do if that kind of emergency occurs and then practice the proper procedures. Few people can think clearly and logically in a crisis, so it is important to think through the proper procedures in advance, when you have time to be thorough and to practice.

5 Starting a New Job When you start a new job, your employer should tell you what kinds of emergencies could happen in that workplace and what procedures you should follow to make sure you are safe. OSHA requires your employer to have an Emergency Action Plan which should include information on: What to do in different emergencies Where shelters and meeting places are Evacuation routes Emergency equipment and alert systems Procedures to follow when someone is injured or becomes ill Who is in charge during emergencies Your responsibilities Practice drills.

6 Emergencies in the News Advance planning for emergencies is essential. It can reduce the risk of injuries or death. Your employer should have a written Emergency Action Plan and you should be trained about what to do in the different kinds of emergencies that could occur. Regular practice drills should also be conducted. What would you want to know if you were in an emergency situation at work?
