1 ID 234 Building Codes Fall 2011 Means of Egress Chapter 3, part II

2 General planning

3 Key terms Building core Common path of travel Corridor Means of egress
Means of escape Natural path of travel Occupant load Passageway Stairway Story Tenant

4 Elements of the egress system
Exit Access – anything (occupied room, space, doorway, aisle, corridor, stair, or ramp) on the way to the exit Exit – any protected, fully enclosed space between the exit access and the exit discharge Exit discharge – any portion of a means of egress between the termination of the exit and the public way Public way – 10’w x 10’h Area of refuge – temporary holding space for an emergency evacuation

9

10 Exit passageways

11

12

13 Exit Access travel distance
Choose the most remote part of plan to the furthest exit

14 Exit Signs

15 Aisles and Accessways

16 Maximum number of occupants

17 Separation of Exits Your diagrams:
Indicate overall diagonal graphically and with number Indicate actual separation graphically and with number

18 Half Diagonal Rule (1/3 with sprinklers)

19 Exit Widths

20 Exit Access Travel Distance

21 Travel Distance Example
Your diagram: On title page Show only longest path

22 Emergency Lighting Required when two or more exits are required
Emergency electrical system or battery General exit lighting and exit signs must be lit at all times

23 Egress system capacity
Based on occupant load Based on sprinklers

24 Occupancy plan

25 Use a key for specific occupancy types

26

27 Number of Exits

28

29

30 Calculations Total number of occupants per floor
Quantity and dimension of egress components Number of toilets, lavatories

31 Calculating Occupant Load
Use Revit, if you dare Create/import Occupancy Calculations schedule Indicate specific occupant load for each room Create 1/32” scale Occupancy Plan and add color scheme to show graphically

32 Or, use Excel spreadsheet

33

34

35 Accessibility in the egress system
Mostly about dimensional constraints Some in the building code Some in the accessibility code

36 Door Dimensions

37 Corridor clearances

38 Door clearances

39 Section 17 Restaurants

40 Restaurant seating: general planning

41 Section 25 Entrances

42 Another Checklist

43 Assignment #1 Fire stair layout

44 Use your studio project dimensions
Due October 11th Use your studio project dimensions Floor to floor heights Thickness of exterior walls and interior partitions (they’re different) Use your design to calculate the occupant load

45 Step 1: calculate occupant load

46 Step 2: Calculate dimension of egress components

47 Step 3: Design fire stair
Plans, sections (2), and hidden elevation of center guard rail/hand rail To scale Fully dimensioned Printed in black and white on 24x36” paper

48 Homework for next week Read ch.s 5 and 6
List all spaces and their areas in your studio project
