Mass The amount of space an object takes up. Small amount of mass Large amount of mass

Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume) –Examples: A brick has mass and takes up space A desk has mass and takes up space A pencil has mass and takes up space Air has mass and takes up space All of the above examples are considered matter because they have mass and take up space. Can you think of anything that would not be considered matter?

METALS left side of periodic table Shiny Malleable (can bend) Ductile (can be made into wire) Good conductor of heat and electricity

Metalloids Near the zigzag line on the periodic table KIND OF like metal, kind of like non metals kind of shiny kind of dull Some are kind of good at conducting heat and electricity Some are kind of malleable – can bend a little bit

Non-metals right side of the periodic table Dull ( not shiny) Most are gases, some are solids and one is a liquid Poor conductors of heat and electricity Examples from your life?

TAKE A GUESS Where are the groups ? Where are the periods? What is another name for Group?

Groups or Families Groups or Families are columns ( go down) – just like your family similar characteristics – just like your family

Periods rows across the periodic table elements gain protons and electrons as we move across the period elements farther to the right they become less metallic

Color the Periodic Table P.P.

Name Those Elements - Whiteboards Group 14, Period 2 Group 11, period 4 Group 2, Period 2 Group 17, Period 3 Group 1, Period 18
