He died at the age of 54, in 1506, in Valladolid, Spain

4. Background Columbus was an Italian explorer
He made four trips to the Caribbean and South America, originally searching for Asia and the far East.
His trips occurred between 1492 and 1504
Instead he is credited for finding North America.

Columbus tried to be sponsored by both Portugal and Italy but both turned him down.
Eventually, Columbus was sponsored by king Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain
He was searching for a better route to the east

6. Voyages
His most famous trip, in 1492, was when he discovered North America.
He had 3 ships – Santa Maria, Pinta, Santa Clara
However, Leif Ericson from Norway, actually found North America first, in the 11th century
Nearly 500 years before Columbus
