ITEC 355 Chris

Scenario  Frostburg State University has chosen our team to check the current network configuration in the Compton Science Center. 10 Gigabit speeds connecting each switch and a 10 Gigabit link to Lowndes Hall. We are required to check every detail of the Compton Science devices, network configuration, cabling etc

Compton Science Center

Step One  Our teams first task was to go to Compton Science Center and examine the floor lay out and get a physical plan of the floor lay out

Compton 1 st Floor plan

Compton 2 nd Floor plan

Compton 3 rd Floor plan

Step two  Next our team went trough the three floors of Compton to determine where and how many computers, printers, access points and other networks materials there were.

Step Three  After finding all the network things we need our team developed two Visio datagrams. One of the second floor in full detail and one of the third floor with general detail.

IP Info  Every VLAN has a separate IP address range. The switch management IP addresses are separate from the faculty/staff, lab, and other VLAN networks.

Staff IP Info  For the faculty/staff networks, these IP address ranges all start with 10.x.x.x where the second number corresponds to the building number assigned to each building by the architects as they were built on campus. So for example, Lowndes faculty/staff networks are 10.15.0.0/22 since it was building number 15, Hitchins faculty/staff networks are 10.2.0.0/22 since it was building number 2, and Compton faculty/staff networks are 10.19.0.0/22 since it was building number 19

Lab IP Info  The lab networks are separated out by the core switch they are connected to (Lowndes Labs, Hitchins Labs, etc) and take their numbers from the building number as well, just on a higher range. So Lowndes Labs are 10.15.100.0/22 and Hitchins Labs are 10.2.100.0/22

Switch IP Info  The management IP address of each core switch is part of a separate Class C subnet, for example 192.168.1.0/24, 192.168.2.0/24  The Hitchins Core switch has a management IP address of 192.168.1.1, the switches in every building connected to the Hitchins core would have a management IP address in the same 192.168.1.x subnet

Compton 2 nd Floor Info  About 90 computers  Two network printers one for staff and one for lab use  Staff IP Range 10.19.103.1  10.19.103.37  Lab IP Range 10.2.104.1  10.2.104.52  Two Network closets where switches are located at IP 192.168.1.1  192.168.1.2  8 Wireless access points

Compton 2 nd Floor Full Detail

Class Network Wiring

Compton 3 rd Floor Info  About 86 computers  Two network printers one for staff and one for lab use  Staff IP Range 10.19.103.38  10.19.103.72  Lab IP Range 10.2.104.52  10.2.104.105  Two Network closets where switches are located at IP 192.168.1.3  192.168.1.4

Compton 3 rd Floor General Detail

Step Four  Then our team examined how each floor of Compton science center was connected to each other and then to the rest of the campus

Compton Network Connection

Campus Connection
