3 Dictionary Correct spelling of words. Definition of words. Pronunciation of words.

4 Thesaurus Gives a list of words that mean the same. synonyms Gives a list of words that mean the opposite. antonyms

5 Atlas A big book of maps

6 Almanac A book that contains facts and information. It is published yearly and usually very current.

7 Internet Our newest information source! It is not always the easiest…

9 The Encyclopedia

10 An encyclopedia is: A set of books that contain information about different subjects. Because all of the information cannot be put in one big book, the information is put in smaller books called… volumes

11 Volumes are: Arranged in alphabetical order to make it easier to find the information. Have a number on the spine to make it easier to put them in order on the shelf.

12 On the pages: Information is arranged in alphabetical order- like a dictionary. You will see guidewords at the top- like a dictionary.

13 On the page… The subjects are usually printed in large, dark letters. Lots of subjects can appear in one page.

14 The subject you look up is called your Entry The information you read is called an Article

15 Finding Information To find a person, look for the person’s last name. Benjamin Franklin Martin Luther King Jr. Queen Elizabeth

16 Finding Information To find a place named with two parts, look for the first part. North America South Africa West Virginia St. Paul

17 Using Encyclopedias Choose a topic. Decide what volume to look in for the information. Use the encyclopedia like the dictionary to find the information.

22 The reason why we use the encyclopedia is to find information. Now we have to take notes--- write the information down.

23 Remember… You must bring your own pencil and paper. Always write down the page number where you found the information so you can come back to it again!
