Waves

Definitions Wave: a disturbance that transfers energy through a medium. The matter does not experience net movement, but vibrates about some rest position. Mechanical Wave: waves that travel through matter.

Common Characteristics of All Waves

Crests: the highest points Troughs: the lowest points Amplitude: the distance between the rest position and a crest or trough

Common Characteristics of All Waves Wavelength (λ, lambda): the shortest distance between two points in the medium that are in phase Frequency (f): the number of complete wavelengths that pass a point in a given time. (Unit: Hertz, Hz) Period (T): the time it takes for one full wavelength to pass a given point.

Types Transverse Wave: the particles of the medium vibrate at right angles to the direction of motion (example: water waves) Longitudinal Waves: the particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of the motion (example: sound waves)

Universal Wave Equation P347 Model Problem

Universal Wave Equation The form of the equation v=∆d/Δt for waves The speed of a wave is the product of the wavelength and the frequency v= fλ

Practice Problems P 350 #5-9
