3. Write down anything in GREEN. Today, Australia is one of the largest nations in the British Commonwealth. This relationship dates back to British Imperialism in the 18 th century. Although countries like France and Holland sent explorers to the South Pacific, Britain made the biggest colonial impact. Captain James Cook is the most famous British explorer to make voyages to Australia; he set up a colony near Botany Bay. Many of the first settlers in the British colonies of Australia were convicts; they arrived in the late 18 th century in Botany Bay. Australia developed into a very similar nation to Britain in terms of culture, politics and economy. In 1940, it became officially independent from Britain.
