3 Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) Wife of FDR Very active First Lady Advocated for women and children Helped with the New Deal program Worked for rights of minorities and the poor Contributed to writing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

4 John Steinbeck (1902-1968) American author Wrote about the poor conditions during the Great Depression Two of his most famous works: Tortila Flat Grapes of Wrath Won the Noble Prize for literature in 1962

5 Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955) O pened Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida for black women E stablished National Council of Negro Women V ice president of NAACP I nformed Roosevelt on issues blacks faced H elped organize President Roosevelt's "Black Cabinet" L eader of Division of Negro Affairs in National Youth Administration in 1936 S ix thousand black Americans completed their educations with Bethune’s help

Philip Randolph (1889-1979) Played major role in the U.S. labor movement & African Americans' fight for equal rights Began the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in 1925 Became the first black trade union to be successful Fought for job opportunities in industry and government for African Americans during WWll

7 Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993) First African American judge on the U.S. Supreme Court Wrote numerous decisions on equal protection for the poor and minorities & freedom of expression Joined the NAACP & from 1938-1950 was chief legal officer From 1940-1951 he was director and chief counsel of the NAACP's Legal Defense and Educational Fund He was awarded the NAACP's Spingarn Medal in 1946

8 Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996) Famous jazz singer know for unique sound Joined a famous band with drummer Chick Webb, they recorded their first big song in 1938 Fitzgerald led band after Chick Webb died until 1942 Began working with the tour group “Jazz at the Philharmonic” in 1948

9 Clark Gable (1901-1960) Famous American actor Appeared in 70 films Won Academy Award in 1934 Won best actor for starring in It Happened One Night

10 Hattie McDaniel First African American that won an Academy Award Won Oscar in 1939 Won best supporting actress Received for performance in Gone with the Wind Was in radio program “Beulah”

11 The New Deal FDR issued this in 1933 to help Americans through the Great Depression Was a government program that gave many people new jobs & government money for food & shelter WWll Began in 1939 U.S. remained out of war until Japanese attacked Hawaii's Pearl Harbor in 1941

12 Hoover Dam Completion Complete in 1936 Great contribution to U.S. economy Produced water for six states in America California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, & Wyoming
