Central GIS Group  Custodians of enterprise datasets not promoted from within the Department and external datasets.  Maintenance and enforcement of enterprise standards  Upon request, provide support to program dataset custodians.

Draft Spatial Data Standards  Want to ensure high quality spatial data.  Metadata does this.  Applicable to “DWR created spatial data”  This is a “living document.”  This is a process not an end in itself.  Legacy data is a special case.

Sample Standards  Files will be organized by themes. (2.1)  Data created from imagery shall only be mapped from orthorecitifed imagery, except for emergency response or legacy data. (6.2)  Thou shalt use NAD83 and NAVD88. (7.2 and 7.3)  Calculate positional accuracy using NSSDA process (Appendix B) (8.1)  All attributes in all tables shall be 99% consistent, and tested using Appendix E. (11.2)

Metadata  Complete metadata is required for DWR-owned enterprise data sets.  Mostly conforms to the Federal Geospatial Data Committee Standards.  27 items where DWR’s standard is tougher.  1 item where DWR’s standard is easier.

Legacy  Metadata still have to be completed for Legacy data.  Legacy data does not have to meet numerical standards.  The data is what it is.

Commenting  Comments by December 3, 2009.  Use the Data Portal to get copies of the documents.  See my e-mail message, or AquaNet news items for details.
