Chapter 20: Nouns Keys to Understanding the Chapter

A noun is a word that names something such as a person or an idea. Generally, students do not have a lot of difficult with nouns. There are only a few things to remember.

Singular and Plural An –s or –es is usually added to nouns to make them plural One dog, two dogs One watch, two watches Some words change to plural in other ways. See the lists on pages 242-243.

There are other ways to make plurals Make sure to review page 248 in Grassroots.

One tricky situation to be aware of… One of the houses is… Two of the houses are… Each of my brothers is… All of my brothers are… Even though the noun in each phrase is plural, some use a singular verb. If the noun is in a prepositional phrase (the phrase beginning with of) the word before the of determines which verb to use.
