2 2 6/24/2011 Current Activities / Issues Five-year review of NOAA Partnership Policy by NOAA Science Advisory Board (Environmental Information Services Working Group) Community interest in future of climate services NWS attention to dissemination, including yesterday’s session on wireless (more below) –Note: Partnership Policy applies to content AND methods of delivery Expectation of growing diversity in observing systems, e.g. National Network of Networks

3 3 6/24/2011 NWS Forum on Wireless Weather Services Held June 28, 2011 Goal –Engage weather enterprise (government, private sector, academia) and core partners (e.g., emergency managers) in discussions on how best to provide wireless environmental information services. –Solicit feedback on most appropriate role for NWS in providing wireless weather services. –Not a “decision meeting”

4 4 6/24/2011 NWS Forum on Wireless Weather Services Discussion areas –1: How can the weather enterprise (government, private sector, academia) best serve the needs of NWS core partners? –2: How can the weather enterprise best serve the needs of general public/national economy? –3: What do service providers need from NWS to support development of comprehensive wireless weather services?

5 5 6/24/2011 Summary Issues/Conclusions Standardization of NWS data/products is critical Combination of (1) IPAWS/CMAS for government-sponsored weather alerts to general public and (2) mobile weather services available from commercial providers is a powerful combination in meeting the needs of the general public

6 6 6/24/2011 Summary Issues/Conclusions There is general recognition that NWS does have a special interest in serving “core partners,” however – –More clarity regarding NWS definition of “core partner” is needed –NWS commitment to meet needs of core partners is understood, but should recognize that core partners also use commercially available services

7 7 6/24/2011 Summary Issues/Conclusions Issues relating to assuring the quality of mobile weather services –Guaranteed delivery of alerts –Establishing qualifications of suppliers and identifying qualified suppliers Emerging issues –Patents –Weather information to automobiles vs. distracted driving
