2 Tech Tips Good communication solves most “tech” problems. Listen and then say something like, “Let’s see what we can do.” Ask clarifying questions, then restate the problem to the patron. Break the problem down into parts and go step by step. As much as possible “use precise language” (or, know the names of things).

3 Tech Tips Practice Good Tech Etiquette. Ask to be invited into their space. For example, ask permission to use the mouse. Consider using a pencil or pen as a pointer, rather than using the finger. Curtail negative self-talk, library bashing, general technology bashing, etc.

4 Tech Tips Cover Your Bases and Know Your Limits. Make sure the person has saved their work to a stable and accessible device. It is OK to say, “I don’t know” and then provide other recourses/resources. Don’t do anything you can’t undo (erase files, log out, etc.)

5 Tech Tips Empower yourself and empower patrons. Your best help is online (“Google it”, YouTube, help forums, tech blogs) Get comfortable with things changing all the time... it’s the only constant. Use a favorite hobby or passion as an avenue to learn more about technology.
