2 Third World Developing nations w/political & economic instability –Often colonized and became independent in the 20 th century –Ethnic conflicts –Lack of technology & education –They need help! Approx. 80% of the world lives on less than $10 a day. Approx 40% of the world lives on less than $2 a day.

5 Cuba US supported dictator in 1950s Fidel Castro led communist revolution that overthrows dictator in 1959 (domino theory?)

6 Reforms: health care & education improve BUT: jails or executes opponents, ends freedom of the press AND: took over US owned businesses –How will the US respond to losing their businesses?

After twenty months of negotiation, most were released in exchange for $53 million in food and medicine.

13 JFK says: –USSR must remove missiles –US will blockade Cuba to prevent any more from entering –US is prepared to invade Cuba *Remember, both countries have nuclear weapons (A & H bombs)…. What happens if the USSR continues to build missiles? Brinkmanship: edge of nuclear war!

15 Khrushchev backs down – removed missiles Peace is maintained! BUT, Cuba is now completely dependent on USSR for aid –Helps encourage commie revolutions in Latin Am & Africa
