Notes: Magnetic Forces

Period 6: What we know about magnets: Not sticky Not sticky There is a force when you put them together There is a force when you put them together They attract They attract They involve some force of gravity They involve some force of gravity

Period 7: What we know about magnets: Negative/positive side Negative/positive side Put opposite sides together Put opposite sides together Connect with each other Connect with each other Stick together Stick together Vector fields Vector fields

Period 6: What we want to learn about magnets: How do they stick? How do they stick? What causes the force for them to stick together? What causes the force for them to stick together? How can they attract to what they stick to? How can they attract to what they stick to?

Period 7: What we want to learn about magnets: How do they connect? How do they connect? What’s inside them? What’s inside them? How do you make a magnet? How do you make a magnet? How do vector fields work? How do vector fields work?

How are gravity & magnetism alike ? Earth’s gravity attracts objects near earth, just as a magnet attracts objects near it. Earth’s gravity attracts objects near earth, just as a magnet attracts objects near it. Both gravity & magnetism can exert forces on other bodies without touching them. Both gravity & magnetism can exert forces on other bodies without touching them. The size of the forces of gravity and magnetism on an object is inversely proportional to the distance between the objects. The size of the forces of gravity and magnetism on an object is inversely proportional to the distance between the objects.

How are gravity & magnetism different ? Gravity is only an attraction between bodies. Gravity does not repel other bodies. Gravity is only an attraction between bodies. Gravity does not repel other bodies. Gravity acts on all objects (matter), magnetism does not. Gravity acts on all objects (matter), magnetism does not.
