STANDARD ORGANIZATIONS

A standards organization, standards body, standards developing organization (SDO), or standards setting organization (SSO) is any organization whose primary activities are developing, coordinating, amending, reissuing, interpreting, or otherwise producing technical standards that are intended to address the needs of some relatively wide base of affected adopters.technical standards

Standards organizations cont. Standards organizations are formed by a group of members from various organizations for the establishment of standards in various fields. Such organizations fall under three major categories: Standards creation committees Forums and Regulatory Agencies

Forums Forums are committees formed by special- interest groups to set standards in fast moving technologies like Telecommunication. The members in such committee are representatives from interested corporations. The forums work with Universities and users to test, evaluate and standardize new technologies. Finally, they present their conclusions to the standard bodies. The main motive behind is to speed up the process of standardization involved in setting the standards by the standard bodies.

Regulatory Agencies Regulatory Agency is a committee formed by the Government of U.S. to regulate the activities involved in Communication technology. The purpose of this agency is to protect the public interest by regulating radio, television and wire/cable communications.

Standards Creation Committees The following are some of the organizations dedicated mainly to establish standards: International Standards Organization (ISO) International Telecommunication Union – Telecommunication Standards Sector (ITU-T) American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) Electronic Industries Association (EIA)

International Standards Organization (ISO) The International Organization for Standardization known as ISO, is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations. international standardstandards organizations Founded on 23 February 1947, the organization promotes worldwide proprietary, industrial and commercial standards. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.standardsGeneva

International Telecommunications Union (ITU) -Also known as International Telecommunications Union-Telecommunication Standards Sector (ITU-T) -An international standards organization related to the United Nations that develops standards for telecommunications. -Two popular standards developed by ITU-T are: i) V series – transmission over phone lines ii) X series – transmission over public digital networks, email and directory services and ISDN.

c) American National Standards Institute (ANSI) -A non-profit corporation not affiliated with US government. -ANSI members include professional societies, industry associations, governmental and regulatory bodies, and consumer groups. -Discussing the internetwork planning and engineering, ISDN services, signaling, and architecture and optical hierarchy.

d) Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) -The largest national professional group involved in developing standards for computing, communication, electrical engineering, and electronics. -Aims to advance theory, creativity and product quality in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics and radio. -It sponsored an important standard for local area networks called Project 802 (eg. 802.3, 802.4 and 802.5 standards.)

e) Electronic Industries Association (EIA) -An association of electronics manufacturers in the US. -Provide activities include public awareness education and lobbying efforts in addition to standards development. -Responsible for developing the EIA-232-D and EIA- 530 standards.
