Organ Systems Working Together

Go Team Cells! In order to keep your body healthy, your organ systems must work together. Organ systems can be organized into two main groups: –Supplying Nutrients and Removing Waste –Regulating the Body

Supplying Nutrients and Removing Waste Organ systems involved in supplying nutrients and removing waste are: –Respiratory system: Lungs, Windpipe, Blood vessels –Digestive System: Esophagus, Stomach, Intestines, Liver –Circulatory System: Heart, Arteries, Veins, Capillaries –Excretory System: Kidneys, Bladder, Ureters, Urethra, Liver

Regulating the Body Organ systems involved in regulating the body are: –Endocrine System: Hormones (chemical messengers) –Nervous System: Brain, Nerves, Muscles

Think about this… You’re out for a stroll, walking happily along, then suddenly… a Giant Tiger jumps into your path! What do you do? Or more important, what does your body do?

Reaction First your eyes, and maybe even your ears and nose, detects the Tiger and sends an electrical message to your brain through the nervous system.

You realize the Tiger is dangerous and decide to climb a tree. Nerves carry electrical signals from your brain to your muscle system. This signal causes the muscles to contract and you begin to move (hopefully faster than the Tiger!)

Other nerves carry messages from your brain to your endocrine system. Your endocrine glands react by pumping chemical messengers into your blood. When these messengers reach your heart (circulatory system) and your lungs (respiratory system), your heart starts beating faster and you take in more oxygen.

With increased oxygen and blood flow your muscles suddenly have more nutrients and you can climb the tree faster. Aren’t you glad all of systems work together?

Answer these: 1.Explain hoe nerves and muscles work together. 2.Explan why organ systems that regulate other body systems are important. 3.How would the health of an organism be affected if disease damaged an organ that: a)Delivered nutrients? b)Removed Wastes? c)Informed about environmental change? d)Controlled other organ systems? 4.How does the statement “all for one and one for all” apply to large, multicelled organisms?
