FROM NOTES :

Galileo Galilei

Inertia: Aristotle—an object at rest tends to stay at rest. Galileo---an object maintains its motion unless acted on by a force.

Discovered by Galileo, using an inclined plane:

Galileo also developed the pendulum clock to measure this acceleration.

Galileo’s pendulum clock

Galileo’s mind experiment. He never did it. g whiz!

Motion is relative to the observer: Bullet velocity differs on and off the Rocket. Galileo discovered basic relativity!

Galileo’s Telescope 

Galileo found mountains on the moon and calculated their height from the shadows they cast, using trigonometry.

He discovered 4 moons of Jupiter  things orbit other planets.

Venus never gets full (washed out by sun), and phases get smaller approaching full!  Venus orbits the sun (Galileo). The church forced Galileo to recant of his support of the sun centered system.

He saw spots on the sun, and watched them move!  sun spins!
