Output 2:  Field interventions and data from seasons conducted.  Tree legumes production (Leucena Diversifolia)  Field evaluation with farmers

a. GRAIN LEGUMES NICHES EXPLORATION The project field interventions was to explore niches for three legumes selected for our sites by the application of the current version of the LegumeCHOICE tool. These three grain legumes are  Field pea,  Groundnut  Soybean.

Farmers were provided with seeds and fertilizers and they were to decide on where in their farms they can fit the legumes They were each receiving 1 kg of seed of one of the legumes seeds and 1Kg of DAP fertilizer.

Prior to the distribution, trainings were provided to farmers for practical guides on good agronomic practices for the legumes. Details on the various data that will be collected during the season for these crops were explained.

Grain Legumes monitoring Monitoring sessions were carried to assess the development of the crops in the implementation sites The monitoring session enclosed the following tasks: Soil sampling of plot where farmers planted the grain legumes. Recording GPS coordinates of each plot where farmers chose to grow the legumes

Field evaluation with farmers We evaluated together with farmers how legumes adapted in the sites and got their own appreciation on the intervention.

Field evaluation with farmers For groundnut and Soy bean 90% of farmers assessed their performance good or very good while for field pea only a 15% rated their performance good and the majority got poor results. They pointed heavy rains as the reason of field pea failure because even common bean struggled in the same sites None the less they all said that they will continue growing the seeds they got.

Tree legumes production We established leucena nursery sites in Bushumba and Mushinga where we are producing 40 000 seedlings. We are targeting to distribute the seedlings next month

Calliandra monitoring Calliandra plantations were monitored in September 2015, a field visit including the project manager was conducted to assess the growth of the Calliandra. In Mulengeza, most of Calliandra was doing well. In Bushumba Center however, there has been a lot of destruction by animals, mainly goats. The main reasons for growing Calliandra were for farm fencing, erosion control, fodder, and stalks.

The performance of the calliandra was assessed. GPS data we recorded for each location where farmers grew the calliandra, and a short survey was conducted with the beneficiaries.
