2. BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG  The battle lasted from July 1 st - July 3 rd 1863.  General Robert E. Lee led his troops into the North to threaten northern cities and weaken northern support of the war.  General Robert E. Lee commanded the Confederate army of 71,699 soldiers and General George G. Meade commanded the Union army of 93,921 soldiers.

3. DAY I OF THE BATTLE  On July 1 st, soldiers from both sides engaged one another resulting in Union Cavalry led by General John Buford slowing Confederate advances in their wait for Union infantry.  Under the command of General’s A.P. Hill and Richard Ewell, 30,000 Conferate soldiers defeated 20,000 Union soldiers resulting in Union soldiers falling back to the hills south of the town.

4. DAY 2 OF THE BATTLE  Union soldiers defended a range of hills south of Gettysburg.  The Confederates surrounded the Union soldiers and later that day they attacked the Union from the left resulting in fierce fighting at Devil’s Den, Little Round Top, the Wheat Field, the Peach Orchard, and Cemetery Ridge.  At the end of the day, Confederate soldiers won little land as the Union soldiers held their defensive positions.

5. DAY 3 OF THE BATTLE  Fighting resumed on Culp’s Hill where 12,000 Confederates attacked the Union line at Cemetery Ridge.  Union soldiers repelled the attack dealing great losses to Confederate soldiers.  Lee led his army back to Virginia.

6. RESULT OF THE BATTLE  A total of almost 51,000 soldiers from both sides were captured, wounded, killed or missing. After three days of fighting, the Union army won the battle which proved to be a major turning point in the war.

7. GETTYSBURG ADDRESS  A speech delivered by President Lincoln on November 19 th,1863. In this speech Lincoln addressed the principals of human equality, reformation of the Union and a new birth of freedom. He also expressed the great need for Americans to remember the sacrifice made by the soldiers of Gettysburg.

8. REACTION TO THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS  It is one of the most famous speeches in American history  It was highly praised for Lincoln’s commanding demeanor  In Massachusetts the Springfield Republican also printed the entire speech calling it a “perfect gem that was deep in feeling, compact in thought and expression, and tasteful and elegant in every word and comma.”

9. QUOTATIONS FROM THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS  “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”  “But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground.”  “ The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”
