Properties of Equality

Operations We’ve used these properties to solve our bell work problems: Addition Property: If x = 4, then x + 3 = 4 + 3 Subtraction Property: If x = 4, then x – 3 = 4 – 3 Multiplication Property: If x = 4, then 3x = 3(4) Division Property: If x = 4, then x 33 = 4

Reflexive Property States that something is equal to itself: a = a KW = KW m‹a = m‹a

Symmetric Property States that if one thing is equal to something else, then you can write it in reverse order: a = b  b = a 3w = y  y = 3w 4(3) = 12  12 = 4(3)

Transitive Property If a = b and b = c, then a = c. m‹1 + m‹2 = 180 m‹3 + m‹4 = 180 MW = BT BT = AY  m‹1 + m‹2 = m‹3 + m‹4  MW = AY

Substitution Property If a = b, then b can replace a in any expression. y = 4 x = 3 + y j = d 2d + 3j = 10  x = 3 + 4  2d + 3d = 10
