Did you know? That if you got stuck in the mud those people became instant targets. Opposing soldiers would start firing at them because they would have to get out to get their vehicle out. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/6718/ac7mq0.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark%3FaBID%3D63528%26p%3D3%26topicID%3D14256326&usg=__GlCyJ4v3PQEycIEhURoWd6QVr3A=&h=650&w=750&sz=160&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=G7Zxg56psGRF-M:&tbnh=130&tbnw=149&ei=H0tZTaKnFc-tgQfE4YG8DA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dww1%2Barmored%2Bvehicles%2Bstuck%2Bin%2Bthe%2Bmud%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1R2PRFA_enUS404%26biw%3D871%26bih%3D412%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=1282&oei=IEtZTfyBH8iRgQf_5qGhDA&page=1&ndsp=28&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0&tx=70&ty=94

The Urfaust This is one of the many things that would go wrong with armored vehicles. They would be super heavy so if they were on wet dirt roads, drivers would often find them selves in the ditch.

BRITISH ARMORED VEHICLES http://www.wwiivehicles.com/unitedkingdom/armoured-car/rolls-royce.asp The rolls Royce had one machine gun. It could Travel at speeds up to 80 Miles Per Hour. It took 2-3 crew members to operate.

The British Ford Model T The Ford Model T was unique because it had a shielded turret gun. It needed 3-4 men to operate. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://mailer.fsu.edu/~akirk/tanks/bel/Bel- Minerva1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://mailer.fsu.edu/~akirk/tanks/bel/Belgium.htm&usg=__3ftY76xrh81HgUYtKUswnoNIm4k=&h=446&w=650&sz=100&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=J53J2vYBs0WqAM:& tbnh=127&tbnw=169&ei=1xI_TYikFsP58Aa1yvDCCg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbritish%2B1914%2Barmored%2Bford%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1419%26bih%3D664%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs= 1&iact=hc&vpx=799&vpy=213&dur=10119&hovh=186&hovw=271&tx=166&ty=117&oei=1xI_TYikFsP58Aa1yvDCCg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=31&ved=1t:429,r:13,s:0

The British Pierce Arrow It was an anti-air vehicle. It took 4 people to operate this vehicle. It has a 40 mm. Flak Gun.

The British Armstrong The Armstrong had 2 machine guns. IT had to have 5 crew members to operate.

German Armored Vehicles it had to take 8-9 people to work at full effiency. It had one 7.7 turret. The turret was shielded

Failures These are some pictures of how they would slide off the road and get stuck. Once they were stuck if they couldn’t be dug out they would just leave them.

Was the Armored Vehicle a Failure? In ways, yes. because they serve no purpose when they are stuck in the mud and soldiers can not travel. In ways, they were not, because they led to half tracks. http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/models/miscellanous/Lanchester-Armored-Car.html Failures ct.

Did you know what armored vehicles started out to be? They started out being farm tractors, made for agricultural purposes. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://strangevehicles.greyfalcon.us/Picturesc/ls1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://strangevehicles.greyfalcon.us/KRUPP%2520KUGELPANZER.htm&usg=__C7VfiUJjVvPzlDnvxjpfgzjTwcs=&h=340&w=524&sz=55&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=059cxhGhddrqIM:&tbnh=106&tbnw=163&ei=lUhZTfHmJc6ftweI8on9DA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dww1%2Barmored%2Bvehicles%2Bstuck%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1R2PRFA_enUS404%26biw%3D1419%26bih%3D690%26output%3Dimages_json%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=218&oei=Y0hZTaKAJ8vegQfCkeydDA&page=1&ndsp=28&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0&tx=109&ty=44

Half track Russia made the first half track. It made it easier to cross no mans land because instead of having wheels, it had 2 front wheels and tracks. It had two 7.62 mm. turrets, it took 5 people to operate. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://photofile.ru/photo/netimofey/2974279/large/106964960.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php%3F155769-Halftracks/page5&usg=__gPZdFS53Ry--0ZGnp5q3roSQ-vI=&h=314&w=490&sz=61&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=Uw7KVyjQ9iZGrM:&tbnh=125&tbnw=167&ei=pWVATYW1F8L-8AaMxvDqAw&prev=/images%3Fq%3DKEGREESE%2Bww1%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1436%26bih%3D664%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=188&oei=pWVATYW1F8L-8AaMxvDqAw&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=28&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0&tx=93&ty=87 http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/models/miscellanous/Lanchester-Armored-Car.html

Half Tracks Cont. Since Half Tracks could cross the terrain better than most wheeled armored vehicles, they were great for getting wounded men to medical centers. http://www.flickr.com/photos/austin7nut/5330020248/

Half tracks were more reliable because they were harder to get stuck due to more moving surface area than on regular wheels. They were also more reliable cause medics would use them to evacuate wounded soldiers.

Defense Against Armored Vehicles http://www.battlefieldtours.org.uk/P4.htm http://greenbooks.theonering.net/guest/files/040102_02.html Back then, the only real defense was to build trenches. Trenches almost completely covered the soldier and protected them from the fire of the vehicles.

Half tracks were the safest and most reliable way to travel if you didn’t want to take a plane or risk getting stuck in the mud with a regular armored vehicles.

The pictures to the right show the terrains that the halftracks conquered. Due to one pivot point in the rear assembly, the whole track could pivot to keep you from getting stuck.
