1. History of the FFA

2. Objectives  Gain A Historical Perspective on the FFA.  Why is the FFA Taught?  Why is Agriculture in Schools?.

3.  1917: –Smith-Hughes Act establishes vocational agriculture courses  1920: –Henry Groseclose, from Blacksburg VA, organizes the Future Farmers of Virginia for boys.

4.  1928: –Future Farmers of America was organized in Kansas City, Missouri

6.  1933: –Official dress is adopted –The same jackets are worn today

7.  1947: –Members vote to start their own supply service  1948 –National FFA supply service starts.

8. PL-81-740  1950: –Public Law 81-740 passes –Gives the FFA a federal Charter. –FFA becomes an co-curricular part of Ag classes.

9.  1959: –The FFA center is established in Alexandria Va. on the land that was once part of Washington ’ s estate.

10.  1965: –The New Farmers of America (NFA), the organization for African American Ag students, merges with the FFA  1969: –Girls where admitted to the FFA –Now they make up 1/3 rd of the membership.

11.  1971: –National FFA Alumni Association is founded  Gives former students the chance to get involved with the FFA.

12.  1988: –The “ Future Farmers of America ” is changed to the “ National FFA Organization ”  1991: –Virgin Islands and Guam are granted association charters.

13. 1999  National Convention was moved to Louisville, Kentucky from Kansas City MO.

14. 2006  National FFA Convention moves to Indianapolis Ind.
