Social Media Workshop

Where to begin...

Social Networking, emphasis on networking Social Networking is part of our lives. Companies spend millions to advertise their services. You are a service! Aims of session: How you can utilise social networks and social media tools in your role as course reps How you can ensure that you are using social networks professionally What measures you can take to separate your personal and professional lives How you can use social media to make yourself more employable

How can Course Reps use social media to communicate with students? Facebook: The most common usage of social media to communicate with your course mates.  Course Communities, made through facebook groups, can be a great place to discuss issues, field views of course mates and organise social events.  As a group admin you can have control of the conversations, of who is in the group and what messages get to stay posted and pinned in the group. LinkedIn: Basically a platform to sell yourself to employers, but one of the most effective platforms available that is utilised by 95% of graduate employers.  LinkedIn not only allows you to generate a profile that can be viewed, but also has community groups that can put you in touch like-minded individuals.

What skills can you demonstrate in using social media? Facebook Groups: Written Communication Using Social Media in a professional capacity (Extreme buzzwords at the moment) Time Management (shown by regularly checking and responding to messages) Corporate Awareness Leadership LinkedIn Profile: Self Awareness Skills Recognition Self Promotion Written Communication Marketing

Do you have a course facebook group? Do you post regularly? What sort of things do you post?

One study shows that 72% of men and 80% of women in the UK have a Facebook Profile and in the age category 18-24 around 95% of people are using it. Even into the next age bracket 25-34 we find around 88% of people have a Facebook Profile. People on Social Media in the UK

Bad Example of Social Media Use for Course Reps Miss Course Rep 14 May 201414 May 2014 · PortsmouthPortsmouth Neil just had his first exam now, and it turned out that the teacher had randomized the questions, so everyone got different questions. Some people had a few of the questions from the practice test they had, and some had up to 18 out of 30 questions being from the practice test. One guy even had the same question twice... How is that a fair exam..????? Doesn’t create productive conversation. Could turn people against the lecturer. Doesn’t help to find solutions.

Good Example of Social Media Use for Course Rep Miss Course Rep 18 November 201418 November 2014 · PortsmouthPortsmouth Gonna put it up here as well! Hey guys! Just wanted to make you aware of a few services you might find useful. Here is a so-called AppShelf where lots of useful apps you might need as a student are collected in one place: http://appshelf.port.ac.uk/http://appshelf.port.ac.uk/ And here is a link to IT Help, where you can look up IT related problems, and also (what I find most useful!) on the top right corner, if you click "PC Availability", you can see how many computers on campus are available, saving you time if you want to see how busy (for example) the library is before actually going in: http://ithelp.port.ac.uk/http://ithelp.port.ac.uk/ ●Providing helpful information ●Responding to the need of their students

Great Example of Social Media Use for Course Reps Miss Course Rep 4 March 20154 March 2015 · PortsmouthPortsmouth Hey everyone. Next week is the spring term SSCC, so if there is anything you want us course reps to pass on, both positive and negative, please let us know as soon as possible! Everything we report in the meeting will be anonymous, but if you prefer to let us know in a private message instead of in a comment here, that is absolutely fine too! (Chloe, Hollie)ChloeHollie Also, please fill in the NSS survey! English Language last year had a response rate of 78%, but this year only 46% have taken the survey, so please take 10 minutes out of your schedule to complete it! Engages students in the student voice process Encourages them to use both public and private message methods to allow for those who are uncomfortable with public discussions to engage. Promotes NSS which final year students should all fill in, to feedback and allow for further improvements for other students.

Situational Example Isabel provided a few snippets of some posts that she saw when she was a course rep, about changes to the tutoring system in her University. Josh Hilary GaskellJosh Hilary Gaskell Sorry, but speaking as an idiot you'll have to excuse me! :P But, why as history students would we want a personal tutor from computer sciences?! It makes no sense! Surely their there to provide advice and support concerning our course? A wee bit tricky to do if they haven't the foggiest what happened in 1815, 1066 or 1534!! Chris BovisChris Bovis I happen to agree with Josh. I think a Personal Tutor needs to be from your department. Changing it would just make any problems with your department so much more difficult to solve. The personal tutor knows the situation and the department alot better than someone from another school, and someone who in a few years maybe based on another campus. Josh Hilary GaskellJosh Hilary Gaskell Is there any way we can stop this from happening?!?! Stephen MarshallStephen Marshall PROTEST !!!! What would you do in this situation?

Don’t use status updates as a form of communication.

Tighten your security settings.

How can privacy settings help you?  ⅔ of employers will search for candidates on social media (if they have made it beyond the application phase).  95% of graduate employers say they search for candidates on Linkedin.  And 93% of employers across the board will review a candidate’s social profile online, with 43% reviewing facebook for a “cultural fit”.  The question is, do you want your boss to see this photo?  Note: Kacper gave permission for me to facebook search him and see what I could find. https://timedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/jobvite_socialrecruiting_survey2014.pdf Luckily Kacper doesn’t have many embarrassing photos on his facebook accessible to non-facebook friends.

Whereas when I looked at my own profile...

Words can have consequences. Like how does this statement from 2013 portray my time management skills?

How to tighten facebook security/privacy settings: Click the little lock symbol to open this menu Then click more settings to take you through to the correct page to change settings. If you aren’t confident on the settings you can use the privacy check-up helper dinosaur.

Continued: Priorities: Change who can see your posts. Then limit past posts to the same. Who can look me up? - Change to suit your best interests (I go with friends of friends now.)

3 Step Process to a solid facebook profile Go back through drunken photos and untag yourself. Update your facebook profile picture to something respectable. Update your jobs and volunteering roles: (Kacper is on it!)

Thank you for listening. Any questions?
