The Arctic Fox is about 18 - 26 inches in length. They live on the Tundra and in open woodland areas. The Arctic Fox is a mammal with a diet consisting of lots and lots of birds. The Arctic Fox is a non-threatened species. THE ARCTIC FOX

Other animals that live in the Arctic are the Musk Ox, Reindeer, The Arctic Wolf, Golden Eagles, The Grey Wolf, The Norway Lemming, The Red Phalarope, and the Ruddy Turnstone. Caribou can grow from 4 - 7 1/4 feet long. Their habitat is on the Tundra and they range from N.Europe to Asia. The Caribou is a mammal and belongs to the deer family. The Caribou’s diet is mainly lichens. THE CARIBOU

On the Tundra, the average winter temperature is about -30 º F. The coldest weather occurs in northeastern Siberia in January when temperatures average -40 º F and have been known to reach -93 º F. Most other parts of Siberia, the Sub Arctic, and sections of Central Asia, Canada, and Central Alaska have an average winter temperature of about -20 º F. The mildest winters occur in the coastal regions of the Pacific Ocean, where January temperatures average about -30 º F. The total average amount of precipitation is 110 mm.

The Tundra is located at the top of the world near the North Pole. There are two types of tundra in the world - Arctic and Alpine. Alpine tundra is located at the tops of high cold mountains. The Arctic tundra is found in the most northernmost parts of the earth.

There is little plant life that grows on the Tundra and their growth is very slow. The growing season is very short. Typical Arctic vegetation includes Cotton Grass, Sedge and Dwarf Heath together with a variety of mosses and lichens. These plants are all adapted to swinging winds and soil disturbances. Alpine plant communities consist of mat forming and cushion forming plants which are rare in the Arctic. These plants are adapted to big winds and huge snow falls. They carry on photosynthesis under brilliant light during the short periods of day light.
