2 What is bone marrow? The flexible tissue found in the hollow interior of bones. Contains stem cells that are precursors of white and red blood cells and platelets. Red Marrow- Myeloid tissue, red and white cells, platelets. Yellow Marrow- fatty cells and some white cells.

4 Why is it important? These blood cells are vital for normal body function. Some of these functions are the following: Oxygen transport Defense against infection Defense against diseases Defense against clotting

5 Purpose of bone marrow cells Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body and remove carbon dioxide from the bodies tissue. White blood cells form cornerstone of the body’s immune system and defend it against infection. Platelets limit bleeding by enabling the blood to clot if a blood vessel is damaged.

7 Activity Groups will examine bone marrow using the microscope. Groups will be able to see cells and fat cells that compile the bone marrow.
