And other issues with time!

Timelines are a way to understand the relationship between events and the dates they in which they took place. We are putting information into chronological order. There are a number of ways in which timelines can be displayed.

Horizontal timelines February August December Valentine’s Day my birthday Christmas Day January April New Years eve Easter

Horizontal timelines – regular intervals 1910 1920 1930 1940 1950 1928 Along the bottom you can add specific dates if you wish

Vertical timelines 1900Event 1910Grandpa born 1932Grandpa marries 1938Dad born 1960Dad marries 1969I’m born 1971My brother David is born

What do you think timelines can be used for?? Seeing when things occurred Helps plot events in order; this is useful in a court room or for an argument Seeing how our world has developed

To understand a story you must know what order things happened in. In the example of the ‘body in the room’ you can make up very different stories by changing the order in which things happened. You can make the story a murder, an accident or somebody discovering a body- it could be any sort of mystery. The body in the room There is a dead body on the floor Someone screamed Someone went into the room Someone left a room Source: Miss Boughhey www.SchoolHistory.co.uk

Chronology is the study of when exactly things happened. When historians put events into chronological order they put them in the order that they happened. Like detectives, by placing important events in chronological order we can discover many interesting things about why events happened. This is when history starts to get really interesting Source: Miss Boughhey www.SchoolHistory.co.uk

As a class brainstorm ideas of significant events that could have occurred in your life time Your time line will need at least 8 events Once you have completed your planning begin your time line See the example electronic time line with added photos.

1996 I was born at the Lyell McEwan Hospital 2001 I began Primary School at Paralowie R-12 School 2005I was 9 years old. My brother and I were jumping on the trampoline when I bounced off and broke my arm! 2009 Started high school

This can be done either as a paper task or as an electronic task. Step 1 chose which type of time line you prefer Step 2 in a draft write down all the major events of your lifetime so far Step 3 put these in chronological order

In order to talk about time we need to be familiar with a number of terms used to describe the measurement of time. Complete the table using the word bank below: timeUnits of time measurement 100 m running race 1500m swimming race Length of school day Time in the morning Time in the afternoon Time 24 hours ago Time 7 days ago Time over 30 days ago Time over 10 years Time over 365 days ago Time over 100 years ago Time over a thousand years ago Month hours Day century Year millennium Minutes AM PM seconds Week decade

Our dating system is broken into two ‘parts’. We live in the “Common Era” this is from year 1 to the present. Older text books will refer to this as AD – Anno Domini. This refers to the years after the birth of Christ. The years before year 1 are referred to as BCE – Before Common Era. In older books this is referred to as BC- Before Christ. BCE 350 100 1 350 700 CE

When referring to the century of when an event occurred we often say “it happened in the 20 th Century”. Is that now because we start our year date with 20– or it is last century? The answer is: the 20 th century was in the century beginning with 19--. The rule is that if a date is referred to as a Century we minus one from the number. Eg the 18 th Century was the 1700s.

Copy and complete the table below identifying the century or the year. The first two examples are done for you. You can make up any year for the missing year. YearCentury 197420th Century 135714 th Century 1678 1189 19 th Century 7 th Century

Throughout this presentation there would have been a number of words that you have been unfamiliar with. What did you do to learn their meaning? Activity: 1. Choose three words that are specific historical terms 2. write a dictionary meaning for each of these words 3. write a sentence for each of these words that shows you know the meaning of the meaning of the historical term.
