Mrs. Wharton’s Science Class

 The energy possessed by an object due to its motion or its stored energy of position.  Mechanical energy can be either potential energy or kinetic energy.

 An object that possesses mechanical energy is able to do work.  Mechanical energy is the form involved in the operation of simple machines.

 Objects with potential energy do not use their energy until they move.  Any object that can move to a lower place has potential to do work on the way down.

 Energy of motion.  Can vary at different points in a roller coaster.

 Can appear in different forms such as motion or heat.  Energy can travel in different forms, such as sound, light or electricity.

 The workings of the universe plus all of present day technology can be viewed from the perspective of energy flowing from one place to another and changing back and forth from one form to another.

 The total energy of the particles in an object  When energy increases the particles move faster  When energy decreases the particles move slower

 Chemical energy is potential energy stored in chemical bonds that hold chemical compounds together.  They are found in foods you eat and matches before they are lit.  Chemical energy is even found in the cells of your body.

 Electrical energy is moving electric charges that produce electricity or electrical energy.  This is found in batteries, or power lines used to run such devices as computers, radios or lights.

 The light that you see each day is a form of electromagnetic energy.  This form of energy travels in waves.

 A type of potential energy that is stored in the core or nucleus of an atom.  Nuclear power plants are used to produce types of electricity. (Simpsons)
