Navigation Acts British Parliament (government body that passes acts or laws) British passed the Navigation Act between 1650-1700 to protect British mercantilism – have more exports than imports in order to make more money Colonists could only trade with Great Britain Smugglers broke the law and snuck in goods from other countries

Sugar Act Taxes is money collected by the government British needed to begin to collect taxes to pay off their debt Passed the Sugar Act in 1764 and taxed goods such as sugar, wine, coffee, silk, etc. Colonists were upset over tax and protested – famous quote “no taxation without representation”
