BUSINESS MATH PERCENTS Chapter 3

PERCENTS – DECIMALS – AND FRACTIONS  Which is the largest number?  25% .25  1/4

IDENTIFY TERMS USED WITH PERCENTS  Percent means per 100, or part of 100  25% or 1/25 = 25 parts of 100  Percent  25%  Fraction  1/4 or  Decimal .25 The easiest way to convert % to decimal is to move decimal two places to left. Example: 42% =.42 The easiest way to convert decimal to % is to move the decimal two places to the right. Example:.42 = 42%

WRITE A PERCENT AS A FRACTION  Drop the % symbol  Place the number over 100  5% = 5/100  Break down to smallest form  5/100 = 1/20  Percent with a decimal  12.5%  Change the % to a decimal = 0.125  Change the decimal to a fraction and reduce  125/1000 = 1/8

WRITE A FRACTION AS A PERCENT  Change fraction to decimal  1/5 or 1 divided by 5 =.20  Change decimal to percent  Move decimal two places to the right .20 = 20%  1/5 = 20%  Complete Exercise 3.1

PART, RATE, BASE  Base = Represents 100%, or the whole of something.  Part = A selected piece of the base  Rate = Percentage or fraction that is the part of the base. Rate is usually expressed as percentage  Example: I have 36 students. 12 are all day. What percentage are all day students?  What are we looking for? Rate, Part, or Base?  What is the base?  What is the part?  What is the rate?

PART, RATE, BASE  Example: I have 36 students. 12 are all day. What percentage are all day students?  What are we looking for? Rate, Part, or Base? - Rate  What is the base? 36 – the whole of something  What is the part? 12 – selected part of whole  What is the rate? 12/ 36 or.33 or 33% - percentage of base

FIND THE PART  What is a 30% discount on a jacket that cost $150?  What are we looking for?  What is the Base?  What is the Rate?  What is the Part?

FIND THE PART  What is a 30% discount on a jacket that cost $150?  What are we looking for? - Part  What is the Base? 150  What is the Rate? 30%  What is the Part?  Part = Base X Rate  Part = 150 X.30 or 30% = $45.00

FIND THE RATE  $15 is what percent of $139?  What are we looking for?  What is the Base?  What is the Part?  What is the Rate?

FIND THE RATE  $15 is what percent of $139?  What are we looking for? Rate  What is the Base? 139  What is the Part? 15  What is the Rate? Rate = Part/Base  15/139 =.1079 .1079 = 10.8%  Complete Ex 3.2

FIND THE BASE  $1,325 is 9.5% of what number?  What are we looking for?  What is the Base?  What is the Part?  What is the Rate?

FIND THE BASE  $1,325 is 9.5% of what number?  What are we looking for? Base  What is the Base?  What is the Part? 1325  What is the Rate? 9.5% or.095  B = Part/Rate  1325/.0925 = $13,947.37

FORMULAS  Part = Base * Rate  Rate = Part/Base  Base = Part/Rate
