Singing With Grace In Your Hearts Unto God What the New Testament Teaches About Singing in Worship to God Prepared by Chris Reeves * Skyline church of Christ Gospel Meeting * May 15, 2015

Singing As Worship to God Singing praise to God was a part of worship for OT believers (Ex. 15:1-2; Num. 21:17; Judges 5:3; Psa. 30:4; Isa. 12:1,4; Jer. 20:13; Ezra 2:41,70; Neh. 12:42-47; etc.) Jesus and his disciples sang praises (Mt. 26:30) Singing praise to God was a part of worship for NT Christians

Singing Basics: Who? Singing can be individual (Acts 16:25; Jas. 5:13), or congregational (1 Cor. 14:15,26; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16)

Acts 16:25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them

James 5:13 Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise.

1 Corinthians 14:26 What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

Singing Basics: Who? Singing, involving the whole congregation, was done by everyone – “one another,” not a soloist, choir, or praise team (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16)

Ephesians 5:19 speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God.

Singing Basics: How? Singing (vocal music) was done acappella only, unaccompanied by instruments and without hand clapping or dancing (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16)

Singing Basics: How? Singing involves the whole person: heart and voice Singing is to be heart-felt, not mechanical or routine; it expresses deep, religious feelings Singing is to come from a thankful heart (Eph. 5:19; Col.

Singing Basics: Why? Singing is an act of worship to God (Acts 16:25; Rom. 15:9; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16; Heb. 2:12; 13:15; Jas. 5:13; Rev. 5:9; 14:3; 15:3) Singing is a sacrifice to God (Heb. 13:15)

Acts 16:25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them

Romans 15:9 and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, Therefore will I give praise unto thee among the Gentiles, And sing unto thy name.

Hebrews 2:12 saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, In the midst of the congregation will I sing thy praise.

Hebrews 13:15 Through him then let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which make confession to his name.

Singing Basics: Why? Singing exemplifies the unity of the church (Rom. 15:6, 9)

Romans 15:6, 9 that with one accord ye may with one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.… and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, Therefore will I give praise unto thee among the Gentiles, And sing unto thy name.

Singing Basics: Why? Singing teaches and encourages both ourselves and others; it is for mutual edification (Col. 3:16). What about members who don’t sing? They disobey the command to sing!

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God.

Singing Basics: Why? Singing expresses deep emotion (Jas. 5:13) Singing was done when times were good (Jas. 5:13) and when times were bad (Acts 16:25)

James 5:13 Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise.

Singing Basics: Why? Singing is a confession of faith (Heb. 13:15)

Hebrews 13:15 Through him then let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which make confession to his name.

Singing Basics: What? Singing expresses the words of the H.S. and Christ dwelling in us (Eph. 5:18-19; Col. 3:16) Singing focuses on spiritual thoughts (psalms, hymns [praise], spiritual songs), not secular thoughts (Mt. 26:30; Mk. 14:26; Acts 16:25; Eph. 5:18-19; Col. 3:16; Jas. 5:13)

Ephesians 5:18-19 And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit; speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God.

How Can We Improve Our Singing? Sing out, to praise God and so others can hear and be taught and admonished [ Parents, encourage your child at an early age to sing. ] Sing from the heart sincerely and with thanksgiving (“singing with grace in your hearts”), not from mindless ritual or routine

How Can We Improve Our Singing? Sing with understanding (remember, the words are more important than the notes; look up the definition of words you do not understand) Sing new songs to keep one from merely “going through the motions” Sit closer together

How Can We Improve Our Singing? Sing to worship/praise God and edify (self and others), not to entertain or attract attention to self (including the song leader); singing and song leading are not performances Be present to sing; take the song service seriously (no tardiness, no leaving early) Go out and practice what you have sung; you will come back ready to sing more!
