“Positive” and “Negative” Activity Physics

The Many Forms of Energy Section 11.1 Physics

Objectives Use a model to relate work and energy. Calculate the kinetic energy of a moving object. Determine how to find the gravitational potential energy of a system. Identify ways in which elastic potential energy is stored in a system.

Energy and Its Forms Kinetic Energy: The energy of motion. KE = ½ mv² Kinetic Energy is proportional to the object’s mass and the square of the object’s velocity. Kinetic Energy is measured in Joules: J.

Practice Problems Pg 251 1b-c, 2b & d, 3a-b

Energy and Its Forms Stored Energy: Potential Energy. If something has potential, it has the ability to cause change. What are some examples? Examples: Boulders at the top of a hill, stretched elastic band, food molecules.

Pendulum Example http://www.physicsclassroom.com/mmedia/energy/pe.html

Energy and Its Forms Gravitational Potential Energy: stored energy in objects that are above Earth’s surface. The greater the distance between the object and Earth, the greater the value of Gravitational Potential Energy.

Energy and Its Forms Gravitational Potential Energy: U g = mgh. m = mass of object. g = gravitation due to gravity. h = height in meters. Measured in Joules: Why?

Practice Problems Pg 254-255 6, 7 a-b

Energy and Its Forms Elastic Potential Energy: Energy stored in objects that have the ability to stretch. This energy is often converted to kinetic energy. What are some examples?

Energy and Its Forms Chemical Potential Energy: Energy stored in molecules. Food, Fuel, Wood, Natural Gas. This energy, as with all forms of energy, is only converted to another type of energy. It is never destroyed.*

Assignment Re-evaluate the “positive” and the “negative” categories. You are going to use the concepts discussed in this lesson to build a roller coaster. Work on Roller Coaster Projects.
