2 What is Energy and Work? Energy is the ability to do work Energy and work are equivalent physical quantities with both having the same SI unit, i.e. Joules (J) Work is ‘Energy in action’ Work can be defined as the product of force and distanced moved in the direction of force by the object doing the work. Energy is what is stored for the purpose of doing work We need energy in order to do work.

3 What are some of the sources of energy? The sun Fossil fuels Wind Ocean waves Radioactive elements Vegetable matter

4 Forms of Energy There are six basic forms of energy Chemical energy Electrical energy Radiant energy Mechanical energy Nuclear energy Thermal energy

5 The Concept of Work Work is defined the product of force and distance moved by the object doing the work. An advanced definition of work includes the concept of cosine. In this definition, work is the product of force, distance moved and the cosine of the angle between the direction of the distance moved and the direction of force.

6 Types of work Mechanical work This is the work done in moving a mass over a distance. It is expressed as : W = F.d Electrical work A battery does work by moving charges round a circuit. This work can be expressed as the product of voltage, current and time, i.e. W = IVT Chemical work This is the work done in chemical reactions
