Energy is what is stored for the purpose of doing work We need energy in order to do work.

5. The Concept of Work Work is defined the product of force and distance moved by the object doing the work. An advanced definition of work includes the concept of cosine. In this definition, work is the product of force, distance moved and the cosine of the angle between the direction of the distance moved and the direction of force.
