6. Letter Dear Students, Thank you for your inquisitive letter. I would be delighted to answer all of your questions. First I will tell you a little bit about myself. I was born in 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts as the second of eight children. My father was a cotton picker and an abolitionist. My childhood was a very strict one, I had to study a lot and learned to read and write by the age of 3. My family and I moved to New York when I was 6 years old, where I was home schooled and taught the progressive image of womanhood. This was the first time that I had heard of the concept of equality for women. I was sent to a girls’ boarding school in 1837, which I did not enjoy. I then went on to become a teacher in Rochester, New York. I became interested in women’s suffrage when I was teaching in New York, because I believed the women should receive the same wages as men. My career of a women’s activist began when I attended the First American Women’s Rights Convention in 1848. I then went on to write my first journal entitled The Revolution, which detailed my opinions and beliefs of equality for women.
