3.  The Harlem Renaissance took place in Harlem, New York. › It took place after the great migration.  During the Harlem Renaissance artistic development, racial pride, a sense of community, and political organization was cultivated.

4.  Claude McKay: › Is considered to be the first important writer of the Harlem Renaissance. › His work Harlem Shadows, wrote about the shock of American Racism. › His poems tackled subjects such as lynching and racial abuse.  Zora Neale Hurston was another important writer. › Hurston was from Florida and wrote many stories about African American life in rural Florida.

5.  Louis Armstrong is considered to be the one who introduced jazz music to Chicago › Jazz was influenced by Dixieland and ragtime  The Blues was another popular music of the time. › The blues evolved from African American spirituals

6.  After the mass migration of African Americans to the North voting power shifted. › At this time African Americans traditionally vote Republican.  Oscar DePriest › Was the first African American elected as a Representative in Congress. › He fought to introduce laws to provide pensions to former slaves over 75 years old.

7.  The NAACP was a strong advocate of the banning the practice of lynching. › This group had been fighting for the end to lynching since 1909 when the group was formed.  This group continually fights for African American equality. › The NAACP started to gain power in the 1930’s › The group was able to defeat the nomination of Judge John J. Parker’s to the U.S. Supreme Court. › Parker was allegedly was racist and was anti- labor.

8.  Marcus Garvey, a black leader from Jamaica inspired the idea of Negro Nationalism. › This concept glorified the black culture and traditions of the past. › Garvey formed the UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association). › Garvey tried to rally African Americans to start a settlement in Liberia.  Garvey was later arrested on mail fraud and deported from the country.
