2 Vocabulary and Tools Bench Hook: Safety tool, holds the block while cutting Gouge: Cutting tool. Has a handle and several different cutting tips. Block/plate: The printing surface, can be either wood or linoleum. Brayer: Roller used to spread ink onto the block

3 Baren; A tool used to rub the back of the print to transfer the ink to the paper. (Spoon back)
Block Print: the print off the block Lino cut : another name for a linoleum block print. Inking plate: glass or plastic plate that we roll out the ink on. Newsprint: in expensive paper used for practice prints.

Printmaking: the art of making multiple copies of a single image. Relief prints, silkscreen, etching and lithography are all methods of making prints. Pull: inking and lifting a print is called a pull. Relief: An image that has high and low areas. Not flat.

Artist Proof: The first print pulled from a block. Or other prints pulled to check how the image looks after cutting. Alterations can be made. Impression number/Edition: The final series of prints. They are all the same, signed and numbered by the artist. SAFETY! Always use a bench hook and cut away from yourself!

Negative space: The space around the objects in a design Pattern: Repeated shapes, lines or objects can create pattern. Pattern creates interest and unity in a design. Texture: The way a surface feels. The real texture of the block will create an implied texture in your design.
