2 What is copyright? Copyright law protects the control of the creative work you make. People must get your permission before they: Copy Remix Share What you make.

3 You see someone’s work you want to use. What should you do to avoid “stealing” (plagiarizing) it? Check who owns it. Get permission to use it. Give credit to the creator. Buy it if necessary. Use it responsibly.

4 Exceptions to the rule: A condition in which you can use a small part of someone’s work without permission or paying a fee is called: FAIR USE

5 When does Fair Use Apply? Schoolwork and Education News Reporting Criticizing or Commenting Comedy or Parody (satire)

6 Other exceptions are: Government documents Common knowledge Works in the public domain Currently, the default term is life of the author plus 70 years. That means that most of the copyrighted works created from the late 1970s to the present may not become public domain during your lifetime.

7 What are the 4 points of Fair Use? You must also follow these rules: Use only a small amount of the work. Add new meaning to the work to make it original. Rework it and use it in a totally different way. Use it for nonprofit purposes.
