Questions Name three ways to minimize the negative effects of fossil fuels. Subject Area: Ch: 5 Sec: 2 Part 3 “Fossil Fuels” EQ: How do we obtain fossil fuels? May 14, 2015 Agenda 1.Roll 2.Chapter 5 Section 2 Part 3 “Natural Resources” 1.Video: “Risk of Energy Sources” Come in Quietly and sit at your desk, open to your notes, write the new question, and wait quietly for class to begin.

Where are Fossil Fuels Found? Fossil fuels are found in many parts of the world, both on land and beneath the sea.

How do Humans Obtain Fossil Fuels? Humans use different methods to remove fossil fuels depending on the type of fuel being obtained.

Strip Mining Strip mining is the process in which rock and soil are stripped from the Earth’s surface to expose the underlined materials to be mined.

Strip Mines Strip miners use explosives to blast away rock and soil to expose the materials to be mined.

Oil Rigs Large oil rigs, some more than 300 m tall, operate in many places, such as the gulf of Mexico and the North Sea.

Problems with Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels provide energy for our technological world, the methods of obtaining and using them can have negative consequences on the environment.

Acid Precipitation Acid precipitation can exist as rain, snow, mist, or any other form of precipitation.

Acid Precipitation Acid precipitation can dissolve parts of statues and kill trees.

Mining Coal Strip mining removes soil, which plants need to grow and some animals need for shelter.

Coal Dust Coal dust can damage the human respiratory system. Coal dust is also flammable and increases the possibility of a fire or explosion in a coal mine.

Obtaining Petroleum In 1989, the supertanker Exxon Valdez spilled 260,000 barrels of crude oil into the water when it ran aground off the coast of Alaska.

The oil killed millions of animals and damaged the local fishing industry. Obtaining Petroleum

Smog Smog is a photochemical fog produced by the reaction of sunlight and the air pollutants.

Smog Smog reduces visibility and is dangerous to the human respiratory system.

Dealing with Fossil Fuel Problems There are many ways that we can help in the problems with the use of fossil fuels. We can carpool, ride a bike, use the mass transit system, and many other methods.

“Risk of Energy Sources” 1.What did you know? _____________________________________________ 2. What did you learn? _____________________________________________ 3. What do you want to know? _____________________________________________

Review 1. How do we obtain petroleum and natural gas? Response: We obtain petroleum and natural gas by … 2. How do we obtain coal? Response: We obtain coal by …

Review 3. Name three problems with fossil fuels. Response: Three problems with fossil fuels are … 4. Name three ways to minimize the negative effects of fossil fuels? Response: Three ways to minimize negative effects are … 5. Why does the United States import petroleum from other regions even though the United States has its own reserves? Response: The United States imports because …

Objectives 1.Classify the different forms of fossil fuels. 2.Determine how fossil fuels form. 3.Identify where fossil fuels are found in the United States. 4.Explain how fossil fuels are obtained. 5.Identify problems with fossil fuels. 6.List ways to deal with fossil-fuel problems Title: Fossil Fuels Standard: 6.c. Students know the utility of energy sources is determined by factors that are involved in converting these sources to useful forms and the consequences of the conversion process.
