1 Before You Read…… Journal: Write about a time when you found yourself in uncomfortable surroundings. This refers to mental/emotional discomfort. – Describe the situation – Describe your feelings – Describe your reactions, behaviors – Describe the reactions, behaviors of others toward you – Describe the outcome

2 While You Read: An Important Warning Foreshadowing: An author’s use of clues to hint at future events in a narrative. – Reader sometimes does not know the meaning of a clue until much later – Clue may be implied or directly stated – Example: “This would make a great question on a Warm Up Quiz, guys!” exclaimed Miss Hanna. – Example: “And although I have kept the name, I am not – for reasons you will soon discover – the same Charlotte Doyle.” True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle p. 1

3 After You Read: An Important Warning What is your first impression of Charlotte? – Is she likable? Why is she sharing her story? Can the reader trust her retelling? Why or why not?

7 Characterization: An Important Warning Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.” Explanation - The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.”

8 Characterization: An Important Warning Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character. There are five different methods of indirect characterization: S peech What does the character say and how does he/she say it? T houghts What is revealed through the character's private thoughts/feelings? E ffect on others What is the character's effect on the other characters? How do others respond to or feel or behave in response to him/her? A ctions What does the character do? How does he/she behave? And, what do the gestures, expressions, and movement show about the character? L ooks What does the character look like? How does he/she dress?
