U3c-L1 1.What is technology? 2.What is an artifact? 1.A. The application of knowledge, tools, and skills to solve problems and extend human capabilities. B. Human innovation in action that involves the generation of knowledge and processes to develop systems that solve problems and extend human capabilities. 2.Something created by humans usually for a practical purpose; an object remaining from a particular period. December 3, 2007 DRILL

UNIT 3 – Engineering Design Engineering, the systematic application of mathematical, scientific, and technical principles, produces tangible end products that meet our needs and desires. What is a systematic application of something? – an organized or established procedure; – a set of steps U3c-L1

UNIT 3 – Engineering Design a.Getting familiar with the Big Idea b.The Design Process c.Core Technologies d.Mechanical Engineering e.Electrical Engineering f.Reverse Engineering g.Fluid Engineering h.Thermal Engineering i.Optical Engineering j.Materials Engineering

The Core Technologies PURPOSE OF LESSON To familiarize students with the core technologies (engineering resources) – the building blocks of the designed world – by having students identify and describe the core technologies as they are applied in the designed world. U3c-L1

The Core Technologies U3c-L1 Write these down: What is a function? The action for which a thing exists What is an application? A use to which something is put

The Core Technologies U3c-L1 What is technology? The application of knowledge, tools, and skills to solve problems and extend human capabilities. What is a technology system? A Technology System is a group of subsystems working together to solve problems and extend human capabilities.

U3c-L1 A technology system is a group of resources (subsystems) working together to solve problems and extend human capabilities. Core Technologies are the subsystems: 1.Mechanical 2.Structural 3.Electrical 4.Electronic 5.Thermal 6.Fluid 7.Optical 8.Bio-Tech 9.Material Technology System

There are several engineering resources (core technologies) that are the “building blocks” of all technology systems. We could store the core technologies on shelves We can go to those shelves and use technologies according to our needs in problem solving. Core Technologies Mechanical StructuralElectrical ElectronicThermal FluidOptical Bio-TechMaterial U3c-L1 The Core Technologies

U3c-L1 Unit Divider – The shelves on which we keep the Core Technologies Your final product will look like: Steps: 1.Draw LIGHT construction lines using the dimensions to the right. 2.Offset lines 3/16” 1.Vertical lines left 2.Horizontal lines down 3.Darken the shelves with HEAVY object lines 4.Draw LIGHT guidelines 1.3/8” for title 2.5/16” for shelves LAST: Title the divider and the shelves

U3c-L1 1.Identify the problem that the technology system solves. 2.Analyze the technology system: What is its function and/or application? 3.List the resources (core technologies) you recognize in the technology system. Laptop ComputerMars Rover Steering Wheel Complete the following questions for ALL 3 technology systems above. Leave space to take notes over the next few days.
